“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to unite in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they can understand,” the late South African leader Nelson Mandela once said.

As the world turns its focus to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, the United States turns a spotlight on its view of sport as an important way to bring people together in friendship and peace. The United States and private organizations also have long used sport as a tool in global development and humanitarian aid “because of its ability to transform lives in unique and powerful ways,” like adopting more positive behaviors, said Mori Taheripour, senior adviser for the United States Agency for International Development Sport for Development program.

At the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Taheripour said sport is a positive vehicle that “captures the attention of youth.” She noted that communities that value sport have learned to integrate it into their child education and economic development programs.
