German Vice Chancellor and Minister for Economy and Energy Sigmar Gabriel and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew arrive for a press conference after their meeting in Berlin on June 19.

Citing German and U.S. “close cooperation on the wide range of shared interests,” Lew said both nations support Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s efforts to bring peace to Ukraine, including his offer of a ceasefire, reiterated in his June 17 call to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Lew, at a meeting with German Minister Of Finance Wolfgang Schäuble, praised Germany’s leadership within the European Union for helping to “maximize pressure on Russia by imposing targeted sanctions” on people and entities that have sought to destabilize Ukraine.

In a separate meeting with Gabriel, Lew said that Germany and the United States are strong partners who share many priorities, chief among them a healthier global economy reached by promoting growth and creating jobs. “To achieve that goal we are working together in a variety of areas, including ... through our work at the G-20, and through our ongoing bilateral dialogue,” he said.
