Washington, D.C.

During his May 12 meeting at the White House with Uruguay’s President José Mujica, President Obama hailed Uruguay for upholding democracy and human rights.

“President Mujica personally has extraordinary credibility when it comes to issues of democracy and human rights, given his strong values and personal history, and is a leader on these issues throughout the hemisphere,” Obama said.

Obama said Uruguay and the United States “have a shared interest in social inclusion, economically and socially.” He also expressed gratitude to Uruguay as one of the largest contributors to U.N. peacekeeping in Haiti and Africa.

The Obama-Mujica discussion, according to a White House release, will focus on increasing economic ties and educational exchanges as well as collaboration in science, technology and health.
