On Friday, April 25, Secretary of State John Kerry will swear in Dr. Deborah L. Birx as the Ambassador-at-Large and U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator to lead all U.S. Government international HIV/AIDS efforts.

Ambassador Birx is a renowned medical expert in the field of HIV/AIDS. For over three decades, her career has focused on HIV/AIDS immunology, vaccine research, and global health. Since 2005, she has served as Director of the Division of Global HIV/AIDS at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), leading implementation of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). PEPFAR is the U.S. Government initiative to help save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS around the world. This historic commitment is the largest by any nation to combat a single disease internationally, and PEPFAR investments also help alleviate suffering from other diseases across the global health spectrum.

The swearing-in ceremony of Ambassador Birx will take place at 11:30 am in the Benjamin Franklin State Drawing Room on the 8th Floor of the U.S. Department of State at 2201 C Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. Secretary Kerry and Ambassador Birx will both make remarks.

This event is open to accredited members of the media with valid press ID*.

Final access time for journalists and still photographers is 10:30 a.m. from the 23rd Street Entrance Lobby.
