27 January is Holocaust Memorial Day, a world-wide day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust. The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2014 is ‘Journeys’. Foreign Secretary William Hague said:

"Today, as we remember the victims and survivors of Holocaust Memorial Day, our thoughts are with the families of all those who perished. The lessons of that terrible time must never be forgotten, for today and the future.

"Today we remember in particular the uprooting and herding of families across Europe; the separation of children from their families on The Kindertransport; the death marches and those few brave escapes.

"We commit ourselves to commemorate and to combat the hatred which allowed such heinous crimes to take place, and to do our utmost to prevent them from ever happening again.

"This year the UK takes on the Chairmanship of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. We are proud to work closely in this endeavour with the UK’s vibrant and internationally renowned academic and NGO community."
