Monitor has decided Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is no longer in breach of its licence to provide healthcare as it has taken a number of steps to enhance its executive and clinical leadership. These include the creation of a new clinical leadership structure and recruitment of a new Chief Executive, Chief Nurse and Finance Director.

Monitor took enforcement action against the trust in November 2012 following patient safety concerns, repeated failures to meet national healthcare targets, including waiting times for cancer treatment and in A&E. This was compounded by poor financial performance, and gave rise to concerns that its Board was not dealing adequately with the range of issues the trust faced.

Cambridge University Hospitals has now met Monitor’s requirements in respect of cancer and referral–to-treatment waiting times, and delivered its financial plan for the financial year ending 2013/14.

Monitor will continue to work with the trust to ensure that it sustains these improvements whilst addressing A&E performance which remains a challenge nationally.

Adam Cayley, Regional Director at Monitor said:

"We are pleased to see the trust has improved the way it provides care for patients, and its financial sustainability. This is down to the hard work of staff at the trust and at Monitor.

"The key now is to ensure this progress is maintained, so, patients are able to access services that are organised, run smoothly, and well-led."
