Following the phone call, a Downing Street spokesperson said:

"The Prime Minister called President Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan this morning to discuss the situation in Ukraine. They both agreed on the importance of finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis. The Prime Minister underlined the need for the Russians to engage in direct talks with the Ukrainian government and emphasised that Sunday’s referendum in Crimea is illegal and consequently any result should be not recognised by the international community.

"The Prime Minister also called on President Nazarbayev to support the UK co-sponsored resolution on Sri Lanka in the Human Rights Council. The resolution supports the call by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for an international, independent investigation into violations of human rights and related crimes by both sides during the civil war in Sri Lanka. Kazakhstan is one of the 47 countries who will vote on the resolution at the end of this month."
